Passport application
Gambian national passports are issued exclusively in the capital city Banjul in the Republic of The Gambia.
Since September 2014, biometric passports are issued by the Immigration Department, which require personal presence for issuance. The cost for this is a maximum of 3,000,- Gambian Dalasis (GMD).
Unfortunately, there is still no possibility to receive applications for passports in our embassies, consulates as well as honorary consulates, even if the Honorary Consul Dr. Georg Bouché is personally very committed to this.
Passport renewals and name changes also take place exclusively in Gambia at the same authority.
Since it is not possible for many Gambians to travel to Banjul, the conventional, non-biometric passports are also issued. These can be obtained through relatives, friends or lawyers on the ground in The Gambia. Talk to your relatives or look for contact addresses of lawyers in The Gambia, which can also be found here on the website.
If no passport had ever been issued, none is available anymore and no copies either, proof of Gambian citizenship must be provided by a birth certificate, which can be obtained through mayors or health centers in The Gambia, even without the personal presence - also through relatives, friends or lawyers.
Gambian ID cards are generally no longer issued.
Return passports, so-called Emergency Passports can be obtained in Germany through the Honorary Consulates.

Emergency Passports in order to travel to The Gambia
The Honorary Consulates of the Republic of The Gambia issue so-called 'Emergency Passports', which citizens of The Gambia can use to travel back to their country voluntarily.
For the successful issuance of such an Emergency Passport, you must follow these steps:

For the issuance of an Emergency Passport we need:
- A copy of a document from The Gambia confirming your citizenship (copy of a passport, birth certificate, Gambian driver's license, membership card of a political party, etc.).
- 2 recent passport photos
- If already available, a copy of the flight details, this will then be entered into the document.

Birth certificates
Birth certificates from The Gambia are also issued without the personal presence of the person in The Gambia. Often people in The Gambia are born in rural areas, and the birth certificates are applied for many years after the birth.
You can get a birth certificate from The Gambia through mayors or health centers, this is also issued without the personal presence. Ask relatives, friends or lawyers to do this.
If you have difficulties, ask your friends or relatives to bring one of the village elders to the mayor or health center. The village elder can confirm the birth, and other important details for the issuance of the birth certificate for their issuance.
To obtain a birth certificate, a document from the municipality, as confirms that a member of the respective municipality, or village can remember that "then" in the family a child was born.
With this document then often a family member goes to the so-called birth registration office and the birth certificate is then issued retroactively. For this, the person to whom the birth certificate is issued does not have to be in the country himself.
